Learn to become a Chinese Calligraphy artist

Build your technique with centuries-old fundamentals and learn the secrets to creating beautiful Chinese Calligraphy writing, even if you aren’t the arty type.

Chinese calligraphy is both an artistic and physical practice. It can elevate one’s body, mind and spirit from internal and external practices. It has been regarded as a good way to strengthen one’s will and lead to a healthy life.

Many principles and benefits of practicing Chinese calligraphy are very similar to meditation and Chinese internal martial arts like Qi Gong and Tai Chi. While one is practicing Chinese calligraphy, one has to calm the mind, body and breath and focus on writing. The breath is very smooth and the mind is very peaceful and joyful.

Using only brush and ink, calligraphers developed their techniques over generations.

Chinese calligraphy is an art which has developed over many centuries in China and is an important part of Chinese culture; calligraphers are revered citizens. Differences in style can convey the feelings, culture and character of the artist who uses language to create their art. The word “calligraphy” is originally a Greek word meaning “beautiful writing“. For Chinese calligraphers, literally, we are “writing” (not painting) the characters with brushes made of animal hairs. Technically, we are “carving” the characters to some extent by using the brush tip to mimic a knife. Mentally, we are “projecting” the characters – that’s why Chinese calligraphy is also called the “picture of soul” or “heart painting” or “mind image”. To project our characters and images beautifully, Chinese calligraphers need to enter a meditative mode to create beautiful, profound and artistic characters.

To be a good calligrapher, one not only needs a well-honed skill with the brush, but also a deep knowledge of various artistic, cultural, social, political and philosophical matters. The more well-rounded the calligrapher, the better the calligraphy.
